The No. 2 seeded UCLA Bruins entered their 2017 NCAA tournament first round match-up with the Kent State Golden Flashes confidently and shutdown their opponents on both ends of the floor throughout most of the first half. Freshman point guard Lonzo Ball (2) delivered accurate passes throughout the game on his way to breaking the school record for most assists in a season, while fellow freshman, forward TJ Leaf (22) delivered a strong scoring performance and forced the Golden Flashes' front court to work for every basket with his length and discipline under the basket. After bringing the game to within ten points going into halftime, the Kent State Golden flashes went on an impressive second half run, led by the outside shooting of sophomore guard Jaylin Walker (23) and the interior pounding of senior forward Jimmy Hall Jr. (35), who finished with 20 points and 15 rebounds in his final collegiate game. The talent of UCLA prevailed late in the game as Leaf, along with guard Aaron Holiday (3) and forward Thomas Welsh (20), continued to score in bunches, finishing with 23, 15, and 16 points respectively.
